How to choose a phone charger

Phones increasingly ship without a charger, and "any USB" from the drawer charges a new phone for hours. The right charger is chosen by three numbers: wattage, the fast-charging standard your phone supports, and the port type on the charger. How many watts you need

• 20 W — iPhone (all models from 8 onward charge at about 20–27 W max) and most of the Samsung A series.
• 25–33 W — Samsung S and A5x series (25 W PD/PPS), Xiaomi and Redmi mid-range (33 W).
• 45–67 W — Samsung S Ultra (45 W), Xiaomi/Poco flagships (67 W), plus a tablet or laptop on the same charger.
• Multi-port (GaN) — one charger for phone, watch and earbuds; GaN means a smaller, cooler charger.

Standards: PD, PPS, QC

USB-C PD is the universal standard — it works with iPhone, Samsung, Pixel and laptops. PPS is a PD extension Samsung needs for "super fast charging" (25/45 W); without PPS a Samsung charges at 15 W. QC (Quick Charge) is Qualcomm's older standard for USB-A ports. A phone only draws what it can — a stronger charger cannot harm it, it is simply future-proof.

The cable is half the job

For 25 W and above you need a USB-C to USB-C cable rated 3 A or 5 A (60/100 W). A cheap unmarked cable limits charging no matter the charger.
