USB cable for your phone — how to pick the right one

The cable is the most underrated part of charging: a 45 W charger with a poor cable charges like a 10 W one, and a cable that does not carry data cannot even copy photos to a computer. Which connector

• USB-C to USB-C — for new phones (Samsung, Xiaomi, iPhone 15+), tablets and laptops with a fast charger.
• USB-A to USB-C — for older chargers and car USB; charging limited to 15–18 W.
• USB-C to Lightning — iPhone 8 to 14 with a 20 W charger; choose a cable marked to work with iOS without warnings. All of them are on the Lightning cables for iPhone page.
• Micro USB — older phones, earphones, speakers, e-readers.
• 3-in-1 — one cable with all three tips; for the car and travel, but slower.

Current and length

For fast charging the cable must be rated 3 A (up to 60 W) or 5 A / 100 W (for laptops and 45 W+ phones). Unmarked cables are usually 2 A. Length: 1 m for a bedside charger, 2 m when the socket is far, 25–50 cm for a power bank or the car. Longer, thinner cables lose more power.

How long a cable lasts

Cables fail most often at the connector joint. Braided (nylon) cables and those with a reinforced neck last several times longer than smooth rubber ones.
