For which platform

• PlayStation 5 — DualSense (original) or compatible with haptics; a PS4 controller works on PS5 for PS4 games only.
• PlayStation 4 — DualShock 4 and compatible wireless; also work on PC over Bluetooth or cable.
• Xbox Series / One — an Xbox controller works on Windows PC out of the box; the best choice for PC gamers.
• Nintendo Switch — Pro controller or compatible; Joy-Con replacements for two players.
• PC — any Xbox-compatible (XInput); PS controllers need Steam or software.
• Phone — a Bluetooth gamepad or a telescopic controller the phone clips into; for cloud gaming and emulators.

Original or compatible

An original controller has full support for every function (haptics, adaptive triggers on PS5, all shortcuts). A quality compatible one costs half as much and for most games is the same experience — the difference is usually battery life and stick finesse. For a child who throws controllers, compatible is the sensible choice.

What to look for

Battery: 8–12 h is standard, USB-C charging. Sticks: Hall-effect sensors do not develop "drift" (moving on their own) unlike classic potentiometers — worth the extra if you play a lot.
