How to choose a smartwatch

A smartwatch today is three things in one: a watch, a health tracker and an extension of your phone on the wrist. Which of the three you put first decides the choice. At MobileLand we offer watches for Android and iPhone, sporty and elegant, plus kids' watches with a SIM card.

Compatibility first

Apple Watch works only with iPhone. Samsung Galaxy Watch (Wear OS) works with Android, best with Samsung. Xiaomi, Huawei, Amazfit and most affordable watches work with both Android and iPhone through their app — but on iPhone they cannot reply to messages. Check the listing for the systems the watch supports.

What it measures and how accurately

• Heart rate, sleep, steps, SpO2 — all have them; accuracy is fine for trends, not for a medical diagnosis.
• GPS in the watch — for running and cycling without the phone; watches without GPS use the phone's.
• ECG and blood pressure — only on pricier models (Samsung, Apple, Huawei) and with the app.
• Calls from the watch — need a microphone and speaker; the call goes through a nearby phone, except on LTE models with eSIM.

Battery and screen

Apple and Wear OS watches last 1–2 days; Huawei, Amazfit and Xiaomi 7–14 days; simpler fitness watches up to 20. An AMOLED screen is readable in sunlight and prettier, always-on display shortens battery life.
