Phone earphones: wired, USB-C or Bluetooth

Earphones are the best-selling phone accessory after cases, and the most common buying mistake is the connector. New phones mostly have no 3.5 mm jack — Samsung, Xiaomi and Huawei use USB-C, iPhones up to 14 use Lightning, and from iPhone 15 USB-C. Which earphones for whom

• Wired 3.5 mm — no charging, no lag; for older phones, tablets and laptops.
• Wired USB-C / Lightning — the same, but digital; make sure they are "with DAC" if the phone has no analogue output over USB-C (most Samsungs and Pixels).
• Bluetooth earbuds (TWS) — no cable, charging case, tap for calls; for work, training and travel. Take ANC (active noise cancelling) models for the bus and plane.
• Bluetooth neckband — cheaper, longer battery, hard to lose.

What to look for

For calls the microphone matters: earphones with two microphones and a wind filter are heard better outdoors. With earbuds look at battery life (5–8 h alone, 20–30 h with the case) and Bluetooth 5.x for a stable link. If you listen from a phone that supports aptX or LDAC, earphones with the same codec sound noticeably better.
