Laptop bag or backpack — how to choose

Laptops get damaged in transit far more than on the desk: a knock against an edge, rain, a slip off the shoulder. A good bag has a padded compartment that keeps the laptop off the bottom and a zip that keeps water out. At MobileLand bags and backpacks are grouped by laptop size and by how you carry them.

Size: measure the laptop, not the diagonal

13.3", 14", 15.6" and 17" are screen diagonals, and laptops with the same diagonal differ in width by 1–2 cm because of the bezels. Measure the laptop (width × depth) and compare with the bag's internal dimensions in the listing. Better 1 cm of space than a laptop that has to be forced in.

Types

• Briefcase with handle and strap — the classic business bag; quick access, in hand or over the shoulder.
• Laptop backpack — even load on the back, room for charger, books and a bottle; versions with a USB port for a power bank and anti-theft (hidden zips) for travel.
• Sleeve — a thin neoprene or felt sleeve to carry in another bag or by hand.
• Wheeled case — for a 17" laptop plus documents, for field work and trade fairs.

Details that decide

A padded laptop compartment with a raised bottom (the laptop does not touch the floor when you set the bag down), water-resistant fabric or a rain cover, a reinforced handle, two compartments so the charger does not scratch the lid. For flights: a backpack that fits under the seat (up to 40 × 30 × 20 cm) saves a surcharge.
