Micro USB cable — what still needs it and which to take

Micro USB was the standard on Android phones until 2017–2018, and it is still the port on most affordable electronics: Bluetooth speakers and earphones, power banks, e-readers, dash cams, wireless mice and keyboards, toys, LED strips. The cable from the box gets lost or breaks first, so a replacement micro USB cable is one of the most requested items at MobileLand.

What to watch for

• 2 A current — cheap 1 A cables charge a 10000 mAh power bank in 10 hours instead of 5; cables rated 2 A or 2.4 A charge at the device's full speed.
• Data transfer — to copy photos from an older phone or camera the cable must be a "data" cable, not "charge only"; stated in the listing.
• Connector orientation — micro USB goes in one way only; the side with the embossed mark or narrow edge faces up. Cables with a reversible micro connector solve that.
• Length — 1 m for most uses, 2 m for charging a speaker on a shelf, 25 cm for a power bank in a pocket.

Micro USB or USB-C

If the device has a small oval port with a narrower top — micro USB. If it is a rounded symmetrical rectangle — USB-C, and you need a USB-C cable. A micro USB → USB-C adapter exists for when you have a pile of old cables and a new phone.

Durability
