How to choose a mouse for PC and laptop

A mouse is a tool you hold for eight hours a day, and most people pick one by colour. The right choice depends on three things: the size of your hand, whether you work or play, and whether a cable bothers you. At MobileLand mice are split into office, wireless for laptops, and gaming mice.

Wired, 2.4 GHz wireless or Bluetooth

• Wired (USB) — no battery, no lag, cheapest; for a desktop PC.
• 2.4 GHz wireless — a small USB receiver, works instantly, battery 6–18 months; for laptops and the office.
• Bluetooth — no receiver, saves a USB port; for thin laptops and tablets, with a slightly longer wake-up.
• Dual (2.4 GHz + Bluetooth) — switches between two or three devices with one button.

Size and shape

For a hand under 17 cm (wrist to tip of the middle finger) a small or medium mouse; over 19 cm a large one. An ergonomic (vertical) mouse keeps the wrist in a natural position and eases wrist pain after long work. A silent click is worth it in a shared office and at night.

Sensor and DPI

For the office 1,000–1,600 DPI is enough; figures of 10,000+ only make sense in games. An optical sensor works on most surfaces, laser also on glass. A rechargeable mouse (USB-C) saves batteries, but a mouse on one AA battery runs for a year.
