Bluetooth headphones — earbuds or over-ear

The first question is not the brand but the shape: earbuds that disappear into the ear, or over-ear cans that shut the world out. The second is whether you need noise cancelling. Types

• TWS earbuds (in-ear) — smallest, with a charging case; 5–8 h alone, 24–35 h with the case. For work, training and commuting.
• Half-open earbuds — do not enter the ear canal, you hear your surroundings; more comfortable for long wear, weaker bass.
• Over-ear — best sound and isolation, 30–60 h battery; for home, office and travel.
• Sports with ear hooks — stay put while running, IPX4+ against sweat.

ANC — when it pays off

Active noise cancelling removes steady sounds: bus engine, aeroplane, air conditioning. It does not fully remove voices. If you commute daily or work in an open-plan office, ANC is worth the price difference; for walks and training you do not need it.

Sound: codecs and latency

Every phone and headset supports SBC and usually AAC (best for iPhone). aptX and LDAC give better sound with an Android that supports them. For games and films look for low latency or a gaming mode — otherwise sound lags behind the picture. Multipoint connects the headphones to phone and laptop at the same time.
