When and how to replace a phone battery

A battery is a consumable: after 500–800 charge cycles (two to three years) capacity drops to 70–80 %, the phone shuts down in the cold, slows down and reports "battery service". A battery swap brings the phone back to life for a fraction of the price of a new one — one of the most cost-effective repairs there is. How to tell the battery needs replacing

• the phone dies at 20–30 % or jumps from 40 to 5 %;
• it charges to 100 % in half an hour and drains in two;
• the back lifts or the screen separates from the frame — the battery has swollen, replace it immediately and do not charge the phone;
• iPhone: Settings → Battery → Battery Health below 80 %.

What "capacity" means on a battery

The mAh on the label should match the original or be slightly higher; suspiciously large numbers on cheap batteries are not real. More important than the number is that the battery has a protection board (BMS) against overcharging and that it is fresh — batteries age on the shelf too, so buy from a seller with turnover.

Replacing it — yourself or at a service

On older phones with a removable back it is a one-minute job. On modern phones the rear glass is glued and the battery comes out with heat and pull tabs — doable with a tool kit, but if you are not sure, bring the phone to our store: we replace batteries on the spot.
